Keeping yourself safe on social sites:

We have taken steps to protect information that is shared on our secure social network.  There are a few important things that you can do to keep your information safe as well.  In today’s computing world you MUST have protection for your computer!

If you are using a government computer or a computer at your place of employment then these protections are likely already in place.  If you access the network from a personal computer be sure to have these things in place:

Have a malware protection software:

Malware -short for malicious software, is software designed to secretly access a computer system without the owner’s informed consent.  The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

Have Antivirus protection on your computer. 

Anti-virus software -is used to prevent, detect, and remove computer viruses, worms, and trojan horses. It may also prevent and remove adware, spyware, and other forms of malware. This page talks about the software used for the prevention and removal of such threats, rather than computer security implemented by software methods.

Have a Firewall in place:

Firewall -is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting authorized communications. It is a device or set of devices that is configured to permit or deny network transmissions based upon a set of rules and other criteria.
